• Brief History

          Pune is considered as the epicentre of education of Maharashtra and India. Because of a large number of private and government colleges and institutions offering courses in a wide variety of fields in Pune, a large number of students from all over India and foreign countries come to Pune for higher education. Students from economically weaker families from rural areas cannot afford the cost of living in a college or private hostel apart from the college fees and other educational expenses and many of them have to give up their plans for higher education which would improve the standard of living of their families.

Dr. Achyut Shankar Apte, a brilliant mathematician and freedom fighter, noted this predicament faced by poor students and he, along with a few like-minded colleagues, set up V.S.S. in 1955. Initially he arranged residential accommodation for a few students. He also arranged with some friends to offer each student two meals once a week. Soon, he took some houses on rent to provide accommodation to more students and set up dining clubs in the hostels of three colleges where these students could got meals at subsidized rates. All these activities were managed by Dr. Apte with the help of a group of voluntary workers (Karyakartas)

VSS or 'Samiti' as it is popularly known, has come a long way over the last 58 years. Now Samiti runs four hostels – 2 for boys and 2 for girls - in its own buildings, which accommodate 712 students. The hostels are located very conveniently in the centre of the city in pleasant and peaceful surroundings.In addition to the students in its hostels, Samiti provides only boarding facility to another 50 students.Apart from the highly subsidized lodging and boarding facilities, Samiti, also conducts or organizes several programmes aimed at improving the overall personality of the students and inculcating appreciation of the dignity of labour, self reliance and cleanliness.

• Management

             The affairs of VSS are managed by a Board of Trustees comprising eminent social workers and representatives of the Advisory Board, Karyakartas and primary members. The Board of Trustees is guided by an Advisory Board comprising heads of reputed colleges and educational institutions. The administration is conducted by employed staff and a group of dedicated Karyakartas organized in various sub-committees, under the leadership of the Managing Trustee.

Thousands of rural boys and girls have benefited from the unique kind of assistance offered by SWA. Majority of them would not have been able to complete higher education without the facilities provided by SWA. Many more students from the economically weak section are in need of assistance. Please help SWA, help them by making a generous donation. Donations to Students’ Welfare Association are eligible for concession under Section 80 (G) of Income Tax Act.

For Sponsoring ONE student:
Rs. 18,000 for one year.
Rs. 90,000 for 5 years.
For completion of education of one student for 5 years:
Rs. 20,000 per year or Rs. 1,00,000 lump sum.
General donation or Donation for the Corpus: Any amount.
